PTSD

When the web gives its mark.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental condition that can develop after exposure to traumatic events. Traditionally associated with experiences such as war, physical violence, or natural disasters, PTSD is now also recognized as a consequence of digital trauma, i.e., crimes committed online. The recognition of PTSD in the context of digital crimes is relatively recent and linked to the increased use of the internet and digital technologies.

With the spread of the internet and social media, people began to experiment with new forms of social interaction, which, unfortunately, also included new forms of violence and abuse, such as cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and online scams, and the resulting exposure to potential digital trauma.

Repeated harassment, threats, and insults online can have profound and lasting psychological effects, generating anxiety, fear, and feelings of insecurity.
The nonconsensual sharing of intimate images or personal information can cause humiliation, loss of privacy, and fear for one’s safety.
Emotional scams, such as dating scams, can cause significant psychological trauma, including feelings of betrayal, shame, and financial loss.

The recognition of PTSD associated with digital crimes is a recent but necessary development, reflecting the growing impact that technology and internet use have on our daily lives.
Growing awareness and ongoing research are essential to better understand and address the psychological trauma that arises from online experiences. Protecting victims, providing adequate support, and implementing effective laws are crucial steps to mitigate the effects of digital crimes and prevent associated PTSD.
